Jared in the woodshop, apron on, headphones around his neck

About me

Quiet, loyal, and probably holding a screwdriver.

I’m Jared. I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and live in Utah now. I do IT and systems work for a living, which mostly means I’m the person people call when something stops working. I’m fine with that. Fixing things is the part I’d do for free.

Home base

Utah

Scottsdale, Arizona before that.

Wiring

Introvert, INTJ

Scorpio, if that’s your thing instead.

Rides

2017 Tacoma TRD

Once hauled a 22-foot Christmas tree. No regrets.

Household

One cat

She sleeps on the bed. We discussed it. She won.

The short version

I’m an introvert who recharges outside. I hike, bike, and wander around the old industrial corners of town, mostly on my own, and then come home and spend the evening in the woodshop or in front of a server rack. Both of those are the same hobby to me. Something’s broken or unbuilt, and I’d like to know why.

As a kid I was “Jaybird.” I’ve been fond of foxes for about as long, which is why one keeps turning up around this site.

Where I come from

Scottsdale for the growing-up years. Then two years as a missionary in Idaho Falls, Idaho, which taught me more about talking to strangers than anything before or since. Some college at UVU studying data science, and then work, because I learn best by doing and the doing was already paying. I’ve been taking things apart to see how they work since long before anyone paid me for it, and the family still calls me first when something breaks.

What I care about

Honesty and keeping my word. Treating people fairly. Being able to take care of myself and the people around me. I’d rather have a few old-fashioned values that I actually live by than a long list I don’t.

Where I’m going

The dream is land. A house somewhere rural and mountainous, near a small town, with a garden and some animals. Not off-grid, I like modern tech too much. Modern tech and homestead life at the same time is exactly the point.

Professionally, I’m working toward my own IT consulting firm for small businesses and households. No name yet, no launch date yet, but it’s a plan I’m building toward, not a someday. I don’t expect to ever fully retire. I’d rather keep tinkering.
